The best artists always make sure that every part of a work is finished and up to standard – even if it is never actually seen. It is the same with preparing the suits and dresses for the big day. Underwear needs to be the highest quality possible and affordable. Who wants to know they are heading up the aisle whilst wearing a pair of worn out hand-me-down knickers?

Derivation of ‘knickers’

However, the word originally comes from a male garment called ‘knickerbockers’. These were a kind of trouser that would be worn by children or golfers and are similar to the ‘plus-fours’ of today. In-fact, the term ‘knickerbocker’ is still used in the USA to mean kind of ‘plus-four’.

A ‘knickerbocker’ is actually the name of a marble maker. It is conceivable that the people who worked in the industry wore a certain style of clothing, including these distinctive trousers. The name of the garment was therefore transferred to it from the people who wore the style.

It is interesting to see how the history of the word has developed from a male piece of clothing to females. The modern lady will also term her underwear as panties as well, whilst in the stores, the section they are sold in is denoted as the ‘lingerie’ section.

The use of the lingerie has changed over time as much as the word has. It was originally designed as a way of keeping warm in the days when buildings were droughty and there was no such thing as central heating. Over time, our lives have become more comfortable with warm buildings and air-conditioned cars. Therefore it is no longer necessary to wear undergarments purely for practicability – these days we can consider more how they look and feel. This means that we have a greater choice, covering panties that feel nice, to garments that will make good viewing by partners and potential partners.

Underwear is no longer a garment that needs to be hidden away for fear of the upper-classes telling us: “we are not amused!” Historically, princesses and queens lived a life wear as much flesh was covered over as possible. This meant heavy and hot garments. They also wore corsets and thick woollen knickers. Imagine living life like that! Now, however, the life of the blue-blooded classes has changed so much, that they wear stylish clothing, which can often reveal quite a lot of flesh.

Take into account how William first laid eyes on Kate Middleton. He was stunned by her appearance on a charity catwalk wearing black lace knickers. This is hardly what Queen Victoria would have approved of – but this is how we live modern life and Kate and William are an entirely modern couple.

Thus, if royalty can now be more revealing and it is no longer something that needs to be hidden away from view – we can all let ourselves go a bit more.
